Fade Friday – Oldblue Co. 19 oz. Plain Selvedge (1 Year, 5 Washes, 7 Soaks)

When fades like this hit our inbox, there’s only one place they belong: Fade Friday. We have become accustomed to seeing impressive, high-contrast fades coming from Indonesia, but this pair of Oldblue Co. 19 oz. Plain Selvedge, submitted by Heddels reader Anggi Firmansyah, is on another level.

Oldblue Co. prides itself on being “tailored for hard workers”, and from what we can see here, it would have certainly taken some hard work to create these crispy fades after just 11 months. The whiskers reach down to the knee, and below that, we have some rippling stacks. What’s so interesting about these jeans is the high-definition in every crease, especially those sharp, stacked honeycombs. The seat has totally faded out, and the patch looks to have gained some nice patina.

It’s hard to imagine how the fades could get much better on these Oldblues, but with five washes and seven soaks recorded, and no repairs needed as of yet, it’s clear that Anngi knows how to look after his denim. Hopefully, we get an update in the future.

Canadian movement Stock Tank Supply & Co. are always looking to push things forward, and this release is a testament to the indigo-soaked imprint they wish to leave in the denim game.

The Homage ’23 VSL-304 Royal Country Blues jeans turn the indigo levels up to 11 with a contemporary denim woven by a mill hellbent on keeping the heritage of American selvedge alive. Yep, this 12.2 oz. canyon indigo x blue selvedge is woven by none other than Proximity Mills. After the closure of the Cone Mills White Oak Plant in 2018, the White Oak Legacy Foundation established Proximity Mills as a small mill in Greensboro, NC, that would continue to weave denim on the same Draper looms that produced iconic American selvedge in the White Oak Plant for so many years. Proximity even employs folks who worked at White Oak who have the skills to operate such legendary machinery.

This 100% American cotton denim — exclusive to Stock Tank — features an electric blue weft emphasized by a broken twill weave. If you’re a fan of striking blue fades that sit upon a darker indigo canvas, this fabric will be a seriously enjoyable project for you. In terms of silhouette, the Homage ’23 VSL-304 is a straight leg fit with a mid-to-high rise and a gentle taper through the leg. Think 60s 501 with perhaps a tad more room in the top block. The denim is completely loomstate, so be sure to check the sizing and account for shrinkage.

Each pair of Homeage ’23 VSL-304 is cut and sewn in LA with a button fly, tucked belt loops, utility loop, triple-needle felled inseams, Japanese YKK hardware, and 9 oz. twill pocket bags from Mount Vernon Mills. Limited to just 60 pairs across the whole size run, a 6 oz. vegetable-tanned leather waist patch from Clo’s General Co. closes out this exciting release from the growing Canadian denim label.

Available for $375 from Stock Tank Supply & Co.

Bradley Mountain is continuously pushing what small-scale, USA-based craftspeople can produce, with the retro-style Polar Navigator Jacket — a hand-cut and sewn instant heirloom that isn’t quite like anything else out there. BM isn’t some massive operation without a budget or care for the smallest detail and the impact of fast fashion’s disposability. This is a brand that cares about making things that last, that work, and that look good doing so.

Winter is coming! And as you might have guessed, the Polar Navigator is for northern-grade temps, with its classic quilted and insulated design which riffs on vintage outdoors wear. Cut from a durable 7 oz. tan waxed canvas that will age beautifully whilst deflecting the elements, the Navigator features a full sherpa-lined hood with a pull cord for warmth and protection from rain and snowfall. The jacket is complete with tonal stitching, dual roomy hip snap-closure pockets, an interior stash pocket, brass snaps on the zippered front placket to keep the chill out, a utility tab, a snap-closure chinstrap, and a locker loop.
