Review – HAVEN Logan Hybrid Jacket GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER® 2L Ripstop / Primaloft®

We're back with another HAVEN review, this time with their Logan Hybrid Jacket — a standout piece from the Canadian label's FW24 collection.

Since launching its private label back in 2018, HAVEN has been honing its experience as one of the world’s most forward-thinking menswear retailers to craft uniquely brilliant technical garments and accessories that draw influence from military garb and techwear, — all infused with flavors from some of the cult brands it has stocked over the years. In-house labels seldom excel, but the HAVEN label has grown year-on-year, outselling even some of the other heavy-hitting brands in the HAVEN roster.

Just over a year ago, I glowingly reviewed HAVEN‘s Logan parka. I  continue to be impressed by the Canadian brand’s private label of technical yet highly wearable garments and accessories, so I’m happy to say that I’m back with another HAVEN review. This time, it’s the Logan’s younger brother, the Logan Hybrid Jacket, which HAVEN kindly sent to me in the drab colorway.

First Impressions

Whilst I wish I could review all of the gear in HAVEN’s FW24 lineup, I had to test out this souped-up bomber-harrington-insulated-drizzler hybrid bad boy. Upon seeing it in the collection, my mind was pulled to images of my grandad’s sand-colored golfing jacket, a piece that was likely purchased in the ’60s and one which I retrospectively admire. And whilst this has a stand collar and cinch-able waist, it’s a whole different animal. It’s made with GORE-TEX®, Polartec®, and filled with Primaloft®, and has technical specs that make it completely unique.

Just like my previous HAVEN deliveries, the Logan Hybrid 2.0 made a lightning-fast trip across the pond and arrived just 2 days after the confirmation email. Big shoutout out to FedEx. It came neatly packaged in a HAVEN zip lock bag like my Logan Parka. I have actually made use of this bag for packing my other HAVEN jacket for trips away, keeping it protected. The same will go for this new Logan Hybrid.

The first thing I noticed about the Logan Hybrid was just how brilliant this colorway is and how well it suits the GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER® 2L Ripstop so well. It’s beautiful ‘greige’ with undertones of khaki and olive, further reinforcing those memories of my grandad’s khaki drizzler jacket. The Polartec® Power Grid™ that lines the collar and makes up the underarm panels is a) soft as hell and b) matches the color of the ripstop shell nicely. While the shell is nice, it’s this Polartec® goodness that really helps it sing.

Fit, Sizing, & Styling

The Logan Hybrid fits true to size. It’s a boxy jacket that, in my opinion, looks best when you lean into the cropped look and cinch the waist in with its cord. If you’re into long and slim jackets/coats, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for. The boxy silhouette makes this a doozy to style with wide jeans, fatigues, and sweatpants.

Hybrid by name, hybrid by nature — the Logan Hybrid suits a range of styles. I’ve been able to pair this with sweatpants and sneakers for a more laid-back, sporty look for trips to the supermarket, and then with jeans and shoes for a more classic menswear look — all whilst remaining cozy and dry thanks to the technical fabrics deployed. If you wear slim tapered or skinny jeans, there is a chance that the Logan Hybrid would look a bit bulbous in comparison to the slim leg offered by those silhouettes, so it’s probably better suited for wearers of straight/wide/relax taper jeans.

Features & Performance

We all know by now that GORE-TEX® is the name in weather-resistant fabrics. And while this jacket isn’t technically completely waterproof (no taped seams blah blah) I’m walking ’round dry as a bone, even after heavy rainfall. Water beads up on this fabric beautifully and it certainly lives up to its Windstopper name. I live in a cliffside town and it gets crazily windy during fall/winter.

The Primaloft is warm, too. Not as warm as a heavy fill/power down, for example, and perhaps not as breathable — this is a 100& synthetic jacket, after all — but it certainly hits the warming metric I imagine HAVEN intended. No birds harmed, either.

That’s all well and good, but one drawback of the Logan Hybrid Jacket is its lack of a hood. The silhouette wouldn’t be what it is with a fixed hood, but a thin packable option for total rain protection would have made this the perfect functional piece. This jacket doesn’t always have to be a top layer, though. It can be rocked as a liner if you live somewhere really frigid. In fact, something I rate about HAVEN’s lookbooks is their 2-jacket approach. It’s something that’s actually inspired my cold-weather styling.

Lastly, I want to touch on comfort. The Polartec® Power Grid™ fleece underarm panels (pictured below in the construction section) not only add some welcome contrast to the silhouette of the Logan Hybrid — they make it super comfy, too. This stuff is soft and stretchy and carries on right down your triceps, giving you real freedom of movement.

Construction

Construction is as clean and precise as you’d expect on a Canadian-made product. What’s especially impressive is how the Polartec® Power Grid™ fleece underarm panels are so neatly integrated into the garment. Unlike the ripstop that makes the shell of the jacket, this fabric (which also lines the collar) is super soft and stretchy, so it would have taken real skill to work it into the garment so tidily. Considering the factory where HAVEN goods are made is just a short walk from their HQ, it makes total sense that they would have a firm handle on QC.

Final Thoughts

The OG Logan Jacket has a fixed hood, the Logan Hybrid has Polartec® Power Grid™ fleece underarm panels and more retro styling.  They may have the same name and share the same GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER® 2L Nylon Ripstop, but they’re pretty different beasts. But you know what? This is what’s so great about HAVEN’s in-house label — it’s diverse. Some brands you’d only go to for a GORE-TEX® shell, some brands you’d go to for something a bit more casual — HAVEN is in the middle lane, pulling influences from hard techwear and classic menswear to produce some of the most diverse technical clothing in the world. Long may it continue.
