The Strike Gold 1105 (16 months, 8 washes)

There are generally two schools of thought when constructing high end raw denim. The first is to make the absolutely most over-engineered product that will outlast almost everything else on the market (Iron Heart, for example) then there are jeans that are designed to decay in such a way that they look absolutely amazing.

The Strike Gold, the brand responsible for this week’s Fade Friday, falls firmly in that latter camp. The iron buttons and copper-iron rivets are designed specifically to rust, the large gold pocket arcs start to unravel after the first few weeks of wear, and the ultra textured denim just gains more and more character with each passing month.

Wearer Rafky, has shown what beauty lies within this wabi-sabi masterpiece. For what he describes as “just typical high school student activities”, he’s created a great vintage-cast fade with a washed out patina that The Strike Gold buyers dream about.

The sourcing team at Devium found a few rolls of deadstock corduroy fabric from decades ago and have custom-dyed it to the lovely shade of cerulean blue you see above.

Despite only being founded in 2006, Momotaro has become a truly classic Japanese denim label. Jeans from their various labels have become mainstays in the denim community but the Going to Battle label —with its 15.7 oz. Zimbabwe cotton selvedge denim and painted battle stripes — is arguably the most iconic.

The latest jeans in the Going to Battle roster are the 0906-SP, a wide-straight silhouette with a high rise, roomy thigh, and full leg. They’re cut from the aforementioned 15.7 oz. GTB denim, which is milled in Japan from rope-dyed Zimbabwe cotton yarns which are known for their varied texture, softness, and overall quality. The fabric is sanforized, too, meaning no shrinkage with a truly cold wash and hang dry.

With a peachy-pink selvedge ID that references the brand’s namesake, details on the 0906-SP include signature back pocket battle stripes, contrast stitching throughout, pink inseam thread, chain stitched hem and yoke, bar tack reinforced seams, rivet reinforcements, and Momotaro’s signature leather waist patch.

Available for $295 from Iron Shop Provisions.

Pull up those socks because boot season is upon us. Timing this transition perfectly is Kleman, a brand with an incredible history and enough time in the business to recognize the staying power of classic design and quality construction.

Designed in the style of workwear boots from yesteryear but with a modern-day twist, the Oxal G VGT boot in Black grained vegetable-tanned leather is ready for daily stomping. Made in France with Italian leather, this European powerhouse features a moc toe paired with a lug sole for a uniquely rugged appearance. Despite looking ready to put the reps in on the factory floor, the all-black nature of this silhouette means you can dress them up, too.

Closed out with a heel pull, this 5-eyelet option will be nice and shiny out of the box but will develop an attractive patina after you put the hours in. On that note, break out the corduroys or denim and get to work!

Available for $211 from Wallace Mercantile Shop.

Today we’re talkin’ heavyweights. And no, not the boxers who can dim your lights with one swift jab to the jaw. Sweatshirts! Specifically from Gustin.

In this corner, weighing in at 14 oz per square yard is the Vintage Heavyweight Sweatshirt in a Natural Rainbow Nep. It channels the spirit of sweats from yesteryear —when you had to break in your gear — so expect a coarse but comfortable first few wears that will yield unrivalled coziness as time goes on.

This rainbow-speckled fleece will be a nice fabric to work into the drab colorway of fall/winter, providing a pop of fun color if layered under a jacket or overshirt. It’s made from. The cotton is woven with 15% polyester, providing enough give without compromising structural integrity. Made in the USA and closed out with flat-locked seams and ribbed panelling, you can tell Gustin did their homework on this one, making this crewneck a no-brainer for the colder seasons.

Available for $119 from Gustin.
