Short Sleeved Camp Collar Shirts

If there is one shirt style that reigns supreme in the warmer months, it's short-sleeved camp shirts. Not only are they easy to dress up or down for a wide range of settings and formality levels, but the relaxed and unstructured collar helps keep you cool by keeping your neck as exposed as possible.

Back with a bang after becoming ubiquitous in the 1950s, we're swimming in camp/open-collar shirts and that's a good thing. So, in our tried and tested Five plus One style, here are five camp collar bangers and one that's slightly out of left field.

When I need a new shirt, Brooklyn Tailors is one of the first places I check, which is why they're up first on this Five Plus One on camp collar shirts.

The BKT18 is a clean camp shirt that lets the Japanese 100% cotton fabric do the talking. And that's good, 'cos it deserves to be the star of the show. Dubbed 'crinkled cotton', this lightweight fabric has a dry, seersucker-like hand and a crisp drape. That sounds like summer lovin' to me. Available in 3 classic colorways shown above, each shirt is made with double-needle tailoring in Portugal and comes with a straight hem, singular chest pocket, and center box pleat in the back for increased comfort and mobility

Available for $215 from Brooklyn Tailors.

Bather has been in the game a little over 10 years, but it's fast becoming a one-stop brand for all types of summer cool. And of course, that offering of cool includes a swathe of open-collar shirts like the White Embroidered Daisy Camp Shirt.

Made in the brand's homeland of Canada, the Embroidered Daisy Camp Shirt features, guess what, embroidered daisies! Bather adorned the sleeve hems of this 65/35 cotton-viscose blend shirt with charming blue 'daisies' that bring the shirt to life without shoving it in people's faces. Silhouette-wise, you've got a classic, boxy camp shirt with a straight hem, which Bather has further spiced up by adding two additional patch pockets toward the hem.

Available at Lost & Found for $146.

3) KUON S/S Sashiko Patchwork Camp Collar Shirt Sax

Leave it to KUON to inject some Japanese flair into the classic camp collar shirt. Their S/S Sashiko Patchwork Camp Collar Shirt takes a host of classic cotton-poly shirting materials, and patches them up using Japan's famous sashiko stitch. The result is a truly unique shirt that was just shy of being this week's Plus One.

Made entirely by hand in Japan, the labor-heavy nature of this shirt commands a very high price. My guess is if you can afford to get into this style, you'll probably never find a shirt you love more, but for many of us this will go down as a grail and nothing more

Available for $849 from Clutch Cafe.

There's only one Made in USA Shirt on this list, but it's a banger from American-made essentials mainstay, Save Khaki United.

SKU's SS Camp Shirt is made from a lightweight cotton poplin, a reliable fabric for summer shirting if you're going for 100% cotton. Sewn into a wide-fitting, straight-hemmed camp collar shirt with dual chest pockets and rear shoulder pleats, the shirt is then garment dyed for rugged splendor from the first wear.

Made in the USA and available in khaki and olive colorways, this is like that one shirt you've always wanted to steal from your dad's wardrobe, but even better. And, you know, yours.

Available for $139 from Lost & Found.

Yes, I hear you. Where's the linen at? Well, my flaxen friends, Knickerbocker is here to scratch that itch with its West Linen Shirt.

Available in verdant teal and earthy brown colorways, Knickerbocker's West Linen Shirt is made from a 5 oz. 100% linen fabric. That shouldn't be uncommon, but sadly too many brands opt for a linen blend these days, when more should push the boat out and go full flax.

Heads on the West Coast are probably cooling down just looking at this beauty, which is made in Portugal and finished with troca shell buttons. Straight hem, dual pockets, camp collar - you know the score by now.

Available for $195 from Franklin & Poe.

If you've been reading Heddels for a while, you'll know that Kapital often takes the Plus One spot of Five Plus One. We're not biased, they just make some really unique and compelling garments, like the 7G Crochet Knit TENNESSEE Aloha Polo Shirt. Phew, that's a mouthful.

Made from a loosely knitted cotton crochet, this Kap piece is going crazy by riffing on vintage knitted polos, Guayaberas, and of course, camp shirts. The crochet pattern features crosses and contrasting strips that run vertically own the torso, all of which sing in their own special way across the two colorways — black and lime.

Available for $542 from Blue in Green.

Red Wing is a classic American company and yet many of their best releases never set foot in a U.S. retailer. American shop Revolvr has taken this Iron Ranger back stateside from the Riders Room store in Hamburg, Germany.

The Rider’s Room Iron Ranger features a black harness leather paired with a green Vibram Chemi Gum, the same kind Red Wing used on their original lineman boots in 1956. They also come withthe standard yellow/brown laces plus a set in matching black leather.

Red Wing produced only 1,200 pairs, very few of which made it back home so be sure to get yours soon at Revolvr.

As we enter the months where wearing denim becomes more of punishment than a joy, the fabric-testing connoisseurs at Gustin have arrived with the savior pair of summer jeans.

Lighter than lightweight (at least by boxing standards), the #351 Japan Featherweight jean is a breezy 6oz., about half of what you’d find on a typical pair of jeans. But don’t think that means this pair doesn’t have any heft to it, the denim is a Japanese rope-dyed indigo selvedge, and it’s replete with the standard rivets, patch, Gustin’s signature selvedge ID belt loop, and is available in their Straight, Slim, and Skinny fits.

It does, however, mean that this pair will start fading pretty much immediately. Gustin says don’t be surprised if you get honeycombs set behind your knees after just one wear, although we’re feeling you’re going to get a lot more than that out of them this summer as there are hardly any other options with this level of breathability and ease of movement.

They’re funding now for $169 and expected to deliver just before the dog days of summer, get in on this fabric at Gustin.

Samurai continues bringing farm-to-table to the clothing industry with its Japanese Cotton Polo Shirt in Natural, Kuromame, Kuri, and Kuri Dark.

Everyone needs at least one polo shirt in their wardrobe come summer, but the decision paralysis is real, especially as the high street is full of copy-and-paste polo shirts that saturate the market. Luckily, Samurai makes it easy, especially if ethics are in play. Made using #10 slub yarn that has been woven in Wakayama and constructed in Kyoto, these buttery soft shirts bring the receipts when it comes to production.

But it doesn’t stop there – what if we told you the actual yarn itself has been meticulously chosen? See, the cotton itself is Samurai’s own supply, grown without fertilizers or pesticides in Sasayama for the Samurai Cotton Project. So yeah, not only is this perhaps the most intentional polo of all time, with its nut button placket and short collar,  However, based on robust details like its slubby texture and construction details including the use of a ’60s vintage Union Special flat seamer for all seams, we won’t judge if you chomp on a leg first.

Available for $159 from Redcast Heritage.
