Fade Friday - Samurai Jeans S5000VX 21 oz. (3 Years, 4 Washes, 1 Soak)

The heavier the weight, the heavier the fades. That’s why these Samurai Jeans 21 oz. S5000VXs, sent in by Joel of New Zealand, have earned the coveted spot of this week’s Fade Friday. After almost 3.5 years of wear, Joel’s heavyweight Samurais have faded into something special.

Joel broke in these blue bad boys by working on photo sets, studying at university, and skateboarding. There’s no doubt all of that kneeling for the perfect shot, nervous sweating during tests, and power ollies led to those stacked honeycombs, indigo loss in the thighs, and tight whiskers. The large swathes where the indigo fully bled out into pearly white are impressive and add a lot of character, as does the phone outline in the front pocket, and the roping on the ankles.

There are plenty of examples where things ‘not being what they appear to be’ absolutely sucks. Lemon ground snow cones. Getting catfished. $2000 Ferraris on Craigslist. But every once in a while you’ll get pleasantly surprised and playing the game becomes worth it again.

This is what the Fly Front Raglan Coat from ts(s) does for us and once we break it down you’ll be sold too. Modeled after balmacaan and countryside coats, this tailoring forward jacket is a formalwear layup. Whether you are rocking a suit underneath or just want to level up your sweats and hoodie rig, you inherit instance elegance with those raglan sleeves, slanted flap pockets, and chin strap converge.

Made from a gorgeous Herringbone Neps Tweed, not only does this coat give you a texture to get lost in for hours thanks to its intricate weave, it’s the perfect fabric to anoint such a classy silhouette. Not to mention it will keep you appropriately toasty. And thanks to a cotton twill-lined body and sleeves you won’t need to worry about the itchy fabric. Wait, what? What do you mean it’s not actually tweed? You can’t be serious. Corduroy? There is no way this is cor—okay, okay, I’ll tell them. But you better be sure.

If that painful text-based one-man show wasn’t clear which obviously it couldn’t have been – surprise! The geniuses at ts(s) have done it again. Creating a mind-blowingly accurate Herringbone Neps Tweed printed corduroy, we are treated to a traditional-leaning long coat with a completely refreshing twist.

Available for $730 from Division Road Inc.

So you say you’re into workwear. And hey, we want to believe you. You’re well-versed in denim, canvas, corduroy, and wool, after all. However, there is one fabric you’re missing out on and without it, Iron Heart wouldn’t have yet another winner on its hands. The 21 oz. Serge Work Pants in Black and Indigo don’t just sound cool, they are cool.

What you might have thought to be some made of marketing jargon to promote these black and blue beauties is actually its core component. See, ‘serge‘ is actually a type of heavy-duty twill fabric characterized by diagonal lines or ridges on both inner and outer surfaces. Resulting in an almost shiny texture when woven with highly saturated black sulfur-dyed or indigo rope-dyed yarns, these smart-looking pants are as durable as they come.

Literally brimming with fading potential, after repeated wear expect some crease-shaped fruits of your labor. Closed out with a great woven tag at the waist, a brass Universal zipper fly, and brass rivets, which colorway you choose you’ll be starting 2025 with a unique fading project.

Available for $415 from Iron Heart.
