Five Plus One - Striped Tees

Coco Chanel may be credited with popularizing the striped t-shirt, but it has a much richer history than high fashion. It actually had its start as a medieval symbol of social deviance. By the mid-1800s, striped tees had been deployed as high visibility martime uniform. And in the 20th century, wool striped tees were worn by early dirt-track and board-track motorcycle racers, also for visibility and identification reasons.
Whatever image the striped tee conjures in your head, thereโs a litany of them on the market, drawing from a range of historic contexts.
