Fade Friday – Momotaro Unknown (2 Years, Unknown Washes, 2 Soaks)

It’s the end of the week, and you know we save the best for last, so let’s dive into the pair of the week, our Fade Friday.

This pair of mystery Momotaro jeans was sent in by Julian Champ of Chicago, who earned his fades while he worked on art and graffiti. We wish he’d sent us some samples of his art, so we could understand how they make for fades this great! He’s clearly very active while he works, because his jeans have lost a ton of indigo, and plenty of high-contrast fades set in during the process.

While his honeycombs are really great, the front is no slouch either. It’s the distressing though, that really sends the pair to the next level. The cuffs, knees, and pockets have all racked up a ton of damage. Is that some work from Belmont Army that we spy at the crotch too?

A lot of brands produce westernwear with no real connection to the American West at all. That’s all well and good — we’re completely down with paying homage — but when a brand collaborates with a legitimate ranch for a limited collection of ranch-inspired workwear, it hits in a different way.

Complemented by a selection of graphic tees and hats, the Hightail Ranch x Iron & Resin collection is home to ranch-ready garb for almost every part of the body, from Double Knee Work Pants and Waxed Canvas Work Jackets to Elk Hide Gloves and Broken Twill Popovers.

Head over to Iron & Resin to check out the full Hightail Ranch Collection.

The N-1 Deck Coat is known for its alpaca/wool lining that makes it incredibly warm. While this is an iconic feature, it makes the N-1 unsuitable for wear in milder temps and typically quite expensive, with reproductions of original N-1s costing on average $500-600. Enter Olderbest Selection and its USN-1 Deck Jacket Unlined.

After establishing itself as the online retailer of Chinese-made heritage clothing from the likes of Bronson Mfg., Bob Dong, and Militora, Olderbest has debuted its new in-house label, Olderbest Selection — a curation of classic core products inspired by classic workwear and menswear. This new collection allows Olderbest to design and produce its own garb, cut out middlemen, and further reduce costs for the consumer.

The Unlined N-1 Deck Jacket is a highlight of the Olderbest Selection, dropping at the perfect time for the warmer climes on the horizon. Coming in navy, khaki, and olive colorways, it’s made from a tightly woven 11.5 oz. jungle cloth with corduroy trimming on the collar and cuffs. Inside you’ll find 100% cotton lining and two internal pockets with welting made from the aforementioned jungle cloth. A Talon zipper and button placket make up the dual closure, and a cord is fitted around the waistband to help you articulate the fit.

At just over $70, this is a shoo-in for a springtime outer layer or even as a robust mid-layer for the rest of winter. And if you’ve never tried the N-1 style before, this is probably the perfect place to start.

Available at Olderbest for $71.

Trends come and go but the straight-leg jean is permanent. And while some folks have a different perception of what a true straight leg is, there is no denying that KATO‘s new barrel fit cuts a beautiful silhouette that leads towards the wider end of the selvedge spectrum.

Honoring its namesake, KATO’s Barrel fit has a wide top block and thigh, a generous knee area, and a taper toward the hem. And despite having that mild taper, the resulting silhouette cuts a fine, straight-leg silhouette that looks comfortable and stylish without the bellowing hems of some wide-leg jeans. Loose yet refined.

The Barrel is rolling into town in 4 proprietary KATO fabrics. The 100% cotton 12.5 oz. Natural Slub Selvedge comes in two colors – a raw medium indigo tone reminiscent of classic 1960s examples and a gently washed ‘Brian‘ edition. And then you have 2 renditions of KATO’s calling card 4-way Stretch Selvedege. All woven in Japan on vintage shuttle looms with  4% polyurethane, KATO’s 4-way stretch denim has an exclusive recipe that provides comfort and vintage style in one vintage-looking package. Making the Barrel even comfier, the 4-way stretch selvedge comes in 14 oz. ‘Indigo Raw‘ that’s based on sought-after 1950s denim and a heavily washed ‘Vinnie‘ version that emulates years of wear and washing.

Each pair is proudly made in the USA and comes crammed with details, including a selvedge coin pocket, custom KATO hardware, and a branded premium leather waist patch.

Available from KATO from $248.

San Francisco’s own Tellason have been making waves in the denim world since they started back in 2008. Of the select pairs of raws I’ve had in my collection over the years, their Black Ankara jeans were always a favorite. But beyond denim dominance, did you know they crush other categories, too?

Their Clampdown Shirt, for instance, doesn’t just provide the perfect compliment to your favorite jeans, its shadow plaid design is a refreshing change of pace from mundane day-to-day shirting. Done in a mid-weight 100% cotton plaid flannel, these shirts are cut and sewn in SF and will surely get some heavy usage as you settle into spring. Closed out with flap chest pockets and a hidden interior pocket, we’re pretty sure this MiUSA shirt just clamped down the odds of any other button-down getting priority in the rotation.

Available for $185 from Tellason.

There is always a way to help. Whether you were out fighting the flames, opened up your houses to people fleeing, or simply had a few extra cans of food that could be donated, the LA fires last month were detrimental to the Los Angeles area. However, in its wake, it also bolstered a sense of community and humanity. A cause that we all could support.

For heritage clothing manufacturer Left Field NYC, support meant creating a Los Angeles Firefighters Support Tee to let the firefighters know that their bravery could not be valued any higher. Printed on an American-made 6.1-oz cut and sewn cotton T-shirt that models itself after the plain white undershirts that people have worn for the last 90 years, a chest print done by Los Angeles artist Jesse Barba provides the perfect focal point for this fundraiser.

All proceeds for this T-Shirt will be donated to the Los Angeles Fire Fighter Foundation.

Available for $50 from Left Field NYC.
