Fade Friday – Railcar for Old North Spikes Selvedge Denim Jeans (1 Year, 8 Months, 2 Washes, 1 Soak)
We love it when jeans tell a story, but sometimes the owner’s stories are even better. Will from Asheville, North Carolina, wore these Railcar for Old North Spikes Jeans for just under two years and has plenty of tales to go along with them.
From hauling around Asheville by foot to hiking around Pisgah National Forest, Will and his jeans have seen a lot together. Like many in search of great fades, he was trying to hold off as long as possible before that first wash, but when one fateful Thanksgiving eve ended with a friend’s dog relieving himself right onto Will’s leg, it was definitely time for a bath.
Many months and a couple more washes later, these babies are looking great with picturebook whiskering and thigh fades to the near white rear area and heavily patinated patch. They are currently taking a visit to Indigo Proof for some small crotch repairs, but these Spikes still have a lot of life left.
These jeans are long sold out, but Railcar’s popular Spikes model is available in a range of fabrics at Railcar from $238.

Heddels may be built on indigo foundations, but we love seeing our favourite fabrics in other colors too. Naturally, 3sixteen‘s newest Harvest Pant in a gorgeous brown Japanese denim has got our attention.
For inspiration on the Harvest Pant, 3sixteen looked across the Atlantic — to France. Specifically, to mid-century French workwear. This nod to our Gallic cousins means the Harvest Pant is nice and roomy, with a part-elasticated waist and two deep rear pockets for stashing tools or, more likely, your wallet.
The aforementioned denim is made up of a delightful chocolate warp and a white weft that gives it a subtle texture reminiscent of gentle snow on the earthy ground. These chocolatey numbers are made in India, using 100% cotton denim woven in Japan. They’ve been rinsed to soften them up a bit for added comfort — especially useful if you want to wear some denim whilst straddling an office chair.
Available for $245 from TENDREL.
Have you ever thought that all Jack Torrence needed to survive the snow-covered maze of the Overlook Hotel was a Storm Rider jacket? No, me neither. That said, Iron Heart‘s beefy, 18 oz. interpretation of Lee‘s iconic flannel-lined denim blouson would have certainly kept him alive for maybe another…25 minutes?
There’s a dense history to the Storm Rider. Lee, founded back in 1889 by Henry David Lee, first used the phrase “Lee Riders” 90 years ago, back in 1935. But it wasn’t until 1948 that they released the New Lee Rider Jacket, known as the 101L, and they didn’t use the name Storm Rider for their lined edition until 1953. We’re not here to talk about the Lee Storm Rider, though (we have a detailed history of it), we’re here to talk about Iron Heart’s all-singing, all-dancing rendition of this stone-cold classic.
Designed by the Iron Heart “Boss” — the founder of the brand Shinichi Haraki — the Iron Heart Storm Rider takes heavy cues from the Lee version but adds the incredible attention to detail that Iron Heart is known for. It is handmade in Japan from a 18 0z. selvedge denim with an indigo rope dyed warp and white weft, which gives it a classic shade of blue that suits the silhouette perfectly. This is complemented by the prerequisite corduroy collar and striped cotton-wool blanket lining. Flat-felled seams throughout keep things tough and neat, while quality of life features can be found in corduroy-lined hand pockets, a denim internal pocket, and satin-lined sleeves.
All of these details come together to form the perfect winter denim jacket, made with end-tier quality, raw, and ready to fade for many years to come. These are selling super fast, so get yours while stocks last.
Available from Tendrel for $604.
