Fade Friday – Lee Storm Rider (Unknown Years, Unknown Washes)

There are untold gems to be found in vintage clothing stores worldwide, and this edition of Fade Friday might have you rescheduling your weekend plans in favor of hunting down some second-hand goodness. This Lee Storm Rider jacket was picked up by Allen of Vancouver. And although it wasn’t faded by him personally, it has plenty of character to be admired.
This cowboy classic has seen lots of hard wear, most likely in the ’70s and ’80s, and the once raw denim is now a washed-out light blue, graced with white fades all over. The bulky sleeves have rippling honeycombs right down to the cuffs, which are frayed and damaged. The blanket lining is also falling away around the neck, but thankfully the vintage Storm Rider label is still intact and legible.

For us, it’s the damage and imperfections that make this jacket such an amazing piece — it almost looks like it’s been pulled straight out of the Lee archives. And the fact that it’s come full circle and is now part of Allen’s wardrobe is really something special.
You can follow Allen and all of his fade adventures on Instagram at @wizardof32oz.

This one is for all the people who have kids with kids – or at least the people who dress like they do.
From Ichiri Nakatsu’s orSlow comes the 101 Grand Dads Fit Denim Pants, based on denim cuts from the 1930s. Featuring a classic shape — a trifecta comprised of a loose fit, straight leg, and mid-rise, and a mid-weight fabric (12oz to be exact) — it’s like these jeans walked right out of a long-forgotten general store right into your dresser. Denim nerds can rejoice over selvage cuffs, orange & yellow stitching, a tastefully branded leather patch, and of course, the dreamy riveted cinch back.
But beyond a pure replication of a long-gone relic, the beauty of this model is its ability to hold up in the modern day. Sure, you can style them with a denim jacket, workshirt, and some leather boots, but you can easily go t-shirt, hoodie, and sneakers with them too. That’s the power of a versatile pair of pants that transcends trends.
Available for $312 from Cultizm.
Vests are great. They can be worn as an outer layer or mid-layer, adding different textures that can unlock a killer outfit. The Logan vest from Vancouver’s HAVEN is not only a great layer builder but is also super functional.
Whilst we’re on the topic of layers, this new version of HAVEN’s best-selling Logan vest is constructed of three different, layered fabrics in Canada— a rugged, washed canvas cotton, a WINDSTOPPER fabric by GORE-TEX LABS and Primaloft Gold insulation. The washed canvas cotton means that, even though this vest uses technical fabrics, it doesn’t look like you’re off to climb Mount Fairweather. Meanwhile, the WINDSTOPPER and Primaloft Gold mean that you’re protected from the wind and the cold.
As with all HAVEN’s pieces, there is some lovely attention to detail, here, namely adjustable drawstring hems and lush microsuede-lined pockets. Each vest is handmade in Canada and comes finished with mesh internal pockets and a branded neck label.
Available from HAVEN for $380.
The hoodie, made in Japan from a premium cotton blend, is garment dyed in a beautiful indigo hue and then bio-washed to create an incredible range of indigo hues. It’ll only get better though — as it’s loved, worn and washed, the hoodie will fade and that range of hues will only get more interesting and vivid.
UES is no stranger to making clothes that last and look better as they age. Founded in 1994, Chuji Matsumoto’s brand takes its name from the word “waste” reflecting his aim to make clothes that people will treasure and use forever. This Indigo Zip Parka is absolutely no exception. It’s not just the dye that makes this special. The hoodie itself is knitted on rare vintage tubular machines, giving it an unrivalled hand feel, fit, and density.
Available for $245 from Redcast Heritage.
Ever pop into your local coffee shop and get serious envy at how great all their equipment looks? This V60 pour over set from Hario in a beautiful olive wood will definitely put an end to this.
All crafted in Japan, the set features Hario’s classic V60 glass dripper, sitting on an olive wood stand with its unique mottled dark brown grain to create something that will take pride of place on your kitchen counter. This is complemented by Hario’s glass Range server, which at 600ml is big enough to make a filter brew for 2-3 (or even more for yourself). If you need any pointers for brewing pour-over coffee in a V60, we will defer to the Hoff.
Though it doesn’t just look good, it will make your filter coffee taste better, too. First introduced by Hario in the 1950s, the V60 takes its name from the 60-degree angle of the cone, which allows you to get the maximum level of extraction from your coffee grounds. Spiral ridges and a lack of flow restriction allow you to pour the water quickly or slowly to get your pour over as delicate or heavy as you prefer, and the heatproof glass means that you don’t lose any heat during the pour-over process.
Function over form? Not anymore.
Available for $128 from Kiriko.
We get it, you want to wear traditional-leaning denim during the warmer months. However, dark shades don’t exactly provide the best color when the sun is beating down. But listen, before you reach for the jorts just yet, let us tell you about Railcar Fine Goods‘ Goldline X105 True Straight Leg Cinch Back 12 Oz Ecru Natural Selvedge Denim.
Featuring a high rise and wide-leaning straight leg cut, you have clearance to hike these bad boys up or let them sag a bit, depending on your preference. But if you want a lock in a certain fit, not to worry; that’s what the cinch back with riveted detailing ’round back is for.
Thanks to the medium-weight raw fabric, these are a breeze to wear and feature all the details you’ve come to love from Railcar, like a stretch-resistant double-waistband, custom-branded hardware, and an in-house-made and embossed vegetable-tanned leather patch. Everything is sewn up in Railcar’s USA workshop, too.
So whether you want to embrace McQueen, David Hemmings in Blow Up, or just want a lighter shade to add to the rotation, this is not a bad place to start.
Available for $268 from Railcar Fine Goods.
