There should be a term that goes beyond mere “vintage” for those truly historical, museum quality pieces that come up once in a blue moon. If there was, that’s what I would use in the headline for the upcoming auction at Holabird Americana.

The collection is called simply “Blue Denim Miner’s Pants - Working Class Overalls; Early, Unknown Manufacturers” and features 15 pairs of early miner pants from c1870-1890, many of which are brands of denim rarely, if ever, seen before. The collection also features other items of the era, like mining contracts and dynamite boxes.

The auction is going off in person at Holabird in Reno, Nevada on Saturday, August 24, but you can peruse and bid straight from your browser. The starting bids are relatively low, but we should expect some of these pairs to push into the high five figures before the hammer falls.

Unbranded UB101 (6 Years, 5 Washes, Unknown Soaks)

Let’s get dirty! This week’s Fade Friday is a down-and-dirty pair of Unbranded UB101s that have been put through 6 years of hardcore wear, with just 5 washes along the way.

Heddels reader Julian over in Chicago submitted these jeans, which he says he wore for landscaping and construction for 2 years.  In addition, he wore them for more than 4 years casually, often doing graffiti. No doubt all of these activities have involved squatting, walking, climbing, and all sorts. Want quicker fades? Get active in your jeans, folks!

With all the rough wear, it comes as no surprise that Julian’s repaired these jeans many times, twice at home and twice at Mildblend Supply Co. and Belmont Army. What’s left is a painted, faded, and torn pair with crazy honeycombs, stacks, repairs, and more for you to feast your eyes on.

Available for $100 at Cultizm.

Horween is one of the most significant and historic leather tanneries in world. They’re famous not only in footwear for their legendary Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan, but also in the world of athletics for producing the leather that’s in all regulation NFL footballs and NBA basketballs.

British shoemaker Crown Northampton thought that was too good a story to pass up, and has combined those official leathers with their Overstone Lo and Hi sneaker silhouettes in a limited release collection.

There are only 30 pairs of each available, so be sure to shoot your shot before the game clock runs out.

As colder air infiltrates the early mornings and late nights, we know that layering is right around the corner. And with that, you might break out the quintessential  waffle knit undershirt as a base. Let’s face it, the texture is amazing, it plays off your other pieces well, and is super functional. But if you ever felt like you wanted more out of your relationship with this square cloth, Corridor NYC has you covered with their Waffle LS in Natural and Green.

Made from 100% cotton and featuring a single chest pocket, this straight hemmed successor to the under shirt is in a whole other league. Keeping things on trend with a shorter, almost boxy fit, it’s easy to envision these with your favorite t-shirt underneath and a sleek pair of slacks or pants down below, preferably plain weave to let the shirt shine but doubling down on geometric gluttony could be just what the doctor ordered.

Available for $215 from Corridor NYC

Injecting new life into the repro WWII denim conversation, famous firm Buzz Rickson saw a blue jacket and brought in author William Gibson to paint it black.

Modeled after the war-time Levi’s Type 1 jacket, with its 4 button placket and flapless single chest pocket, everything looks as you might expect until you realize 13.6 oz original black denim was used instead of blue, indigo dyed denim. The result is a garment with all the bells and whistles you’d expect – like iron donut buttons with laurel wreath detailing, copper rivets, and a buckle-back cinch – just in a subtly different shade that will make all the difference in the long run.  Closed out with white and pink selvedge, rep a historic design in a way that was never actually produced. Alternate reality vintage. Woah.

Available for $330 from Hinoya.

Anonymous Ism socks aren’t exactly unknown, despite what their brand name might lead you to believe. The Slub Crew Sock are a standout among their lineup of incredibly popular socks that are popular for a reason – they’re beautiful and functional, made with care and high attention to detail in Japan (sound familiar?). And, now that Clutch Cafe has loaded up on these pretty feet sleeves, you can experience a pair or two for yourself.

Available in a wide variety of colors to match every fit you can throw at it, these bumpy, slubby, and ribbed 83/16/1 cotton/nylon/poly blend socks are expertly composed to handle hugging your feet daily for 8+ hour stretches, all the while looking good. It’s surprising how much a pop of texture between your ankle and trouser/jean hem can change your fits, so pick a colour and get to experimenting.

Available for $35 a pair from Clutch Cafe.
