Chambray Work Jackets

We all know that denim is objectively the world’s best fabric, but chambray isn’t too far behind. As a twill it shares many of the characteristics of denim, and the 1 x 1 construction gives it a more uniform look even when the yarns are slubby. It’s generally lighter weight than denim, making it an excellent option for a lightweight jacket — perfect for daily use as the weather warms.

Thankfully, chambray isn’t just limited to shirting, and there is dozens of options for a chambray jacket to work into your wardrobe. Coveralls, jungle jackets, and even pieces inspired by old world Japanese workwear, this week’s Five Plus One is a chambray infused doozy.

Oni is well known for its top-notch denim, but they excel in a wide range of garment design and construction. Their 03101-HCBGY Blue Gray Coverall is made from an 8.3Oz. chambray, and while this is heavy from a chambray perspective, it’s still an excellent option for a lightweight jacket. It’s made in Japan from a light blue chambray that pairs well with the contrasting white stitching, and several large front pockets ensure you have ample room for whatever you’re lugging around.

Available for ~$222 from Redcast Heritage Co.

Cushman‘s interpretation of a coverall jacket is a bit more elevated than the competition. Their Lot 21895 Black Chambray Coverall, despite having the requisite patchwork pockets, features a curved hemline and more refined lapels. This made-in-Japan jacket is based on those from the 1930s, and the black fabric, tonal stitching, and matching buttons create a jacket that is simple, classic, and unique.

Available for $325 from Clutch Cafe.

Japan Blue‘s take on the Chambray Coverall is a polar opposite of Cushman‘s. Made from an ultra-heavy 14 oz. chambray, this jacket features angled chest pockets and rivet cuff buttons which firmly plant the garment in the workwear category. While I’ve suggested chambray jackets as a nice, light spring jacket it’s worth noting that this 14 oz. beast is going to be anything but light. Regardless, if that’s something that appeals to you then this jacket is definitely worth consideration.

Available for $295 from Cultizm.

Engineered Garments‘ use of chambray for their Jungle Fatigue Jacket is a fun interpretation that we don’t often see. Made in the USA from a lightweight chambray, this jacket has a boxy design and tons of oversized pockets giving it a unique and appealing look. Contrasting white stitching and buttons add a bit of pop to this piece, but the placket hiding the buttons while closed calms things down a bit.

Available for $220 from Lost & Found.

5) Post Overalls: Post 43 Vintage Sheeting Chambray Work Jacket

Few companies do unique workwear better than Post Overalls, so it should surprise no one that they make a killer Chambray Work Jacket. Made in Japan from a lightweight sheeting-grade 5 oz. chambray, this is the perfect piece of outerwear when you just need to toss something light and simple on for a bit more warmth. It has the large patch pockets that you’d expect from such a style of jacket, but with refined stitching and a double buttoned collar.

Available for $410 from Clutch Cafe.

Universal Works‘ Osaka Work Jacket is a unique, Japanese-inspired work jacket quite unlike anything else on this list. That said, the large patch pockets and contrasting white stitching definitely share similarities with the other jackets in this category. Finished with an overlapping, tied closure, this jacket offers a pretty unique style inspired by old world Japanese workwear. If it speaks to you, then I think you might have found your next piece of outerwear.

Available for $245 from Calculus.

/ In Partnership with Grant Stone /

It takes over a month to make Badalassi Carlo Tannery's Minerva leather, and Grant Stone makes it into boots to last a lifetime.

During the process, the hides are placed in a 'Bottali,' a large rotating barrel, that allows the organic tanning substances to stay in contact with the tannins for 30-35 days. The result is a vibrant leather with transparency, depth, and grain.

You can find the Minerva on Grant Stone’s beautiful Saddle Tan version of their Diesel Boot as pictured above and throughout their full collection.

Mixing it up a bit is Samurai with their Fukuro Sporty Track Jacket in Black. Made from polyester, a material we didn’t think the heavyweight denim brand even knew about, the jacket is totally 70s-inspired and trades 3 stripes along the arms for 1.

Featuring an embroidered owl logo on the chest and a zip-up Waldes closure, side handwarmer pockets, and a slim fit complete the design in classic style. Naturally, they are made in Japan and will compliment your favorite pair of rigid or washed-out jeans unlike anything else heritage-leaning in your repertoire. So layer it with a sweater or sweatshirt, rock it with a t-shirt, or pair it with a button-down – just don’t leave it behind.

Available for $226 from Corlection.
